Abstract
One of the tasks of Charles University's Long-Term Plan is to "prepare and implement a new CU publishing policy, including electronic publications" (DZ CU 2011–2015, p. 7). Charles University is aware of the changed conditions for the dissemination of knowledge in contemporary society. The whole societal framework determining the importance of the publication activity of academic workers is changing, the preference of publication genres is changing, the role of individual carriers has changed significantly, especially with the expansion and use of the Internet. The core of the prospective vision of the publishing policy of the UK (including both publishing activities and the use of electronic resources) is to consider it as part of the so-called third role. It means fulfilling the mission of the UK also in the field of spreading education in Czech society and making knowledge available to experts and the wider public outside the UK with a minimum of barriers. At the same time, however, the status of the UK as a publishing institution for its academic and research workers and students cannot be neglected.
